INTRODUCTION

Ukrainian literature has had a difficult period of development because of constant foreign domination of Ukrainian territories over the past centuries. As a result, many texts have been claimed by other nations (see Valeriy Shevchuk: Lost Ukrainian Culture Over the Past 1000 Years). At times the publication of books in the Ukrainian language has been prohibited. However, despite foreign rule by Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman and Russian empires, and despite Soviet repression, Ukrainian authors managed to produce a rich literary heritage.

With some exceptions, this website deals primarily with prose works. It is a work in progress and will be constantly updated. Please direct comments and offers of help, plus translated works to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Ukrainian Literature in English is a website which attempts to bring together all that has been translated into English from Ukrainian. It is not a mere bibliography, a good example of which is Marta Tarnawska’s “Ukrainian Literature in English: Books and Pamphlets, 1890–1965: An Annotated Bibliography”, which has been published with several updates.

Here you will be able to get a taste of Ukrainian literature by viewing snippets (at times even whole works) of some of Ukraine’s best authors of fiction and occasionally non-fiction. Through links provided here you will be able to buy some of these books in English or learn where to find out-of-print copies.

While much of the background information has been scoured from the internet, the translations of texts, unless otherwise noted, has been made by Yuri Tkacz.
